Caffeine is a cheap and effective supplement for bodybuilders and endurance athletes alike. In this video we will talk about what kind of caffeine to take, how much to take, when to take it, caffeine tolerance, and also about what the research says. Caffeine comes in different forms and surprisingly, coffee is not the best way! Several studies have shown that the anhydrous caffeine in the pill form is more effective in improving perfomance than the caffeine in coffee. If you want to maximize your performance, you should use the pill form. Two added benefits of using caffeine pills, first its far cheaper. For the price of one fancy starbucks coffee you can buy a bottle with 100 doses of caffeine in it. The second benefit of using the caffeine in pill form is that you know your exact dosage. Speaking of dosage, lets talk about how much to use. Oddly enough, more is not better. Several studies have shown that there is no increase in strength or endurance if you consume more than the recommend amount of caffiene. This makes caffeine unlike many other supplements. So, how much should you take? The research shows there is no benefit to taking more than 6mg/KG before your sports activity, I would recommend half that or 3mg/kg - so for a 150lb person thats 200mg. Take your caffeine about an hour before your lifting session and take it at most once per day. If you dont want the caffeine to interfere with your sleep you would best be advised to have your workout in the morning to allow the caffeine to be eliminated from your system by bedtime. Dont take caffeine if you have any history of heart irregularies. Caffeine tolerance is a very important issue here. You quickly build up a tolerance to caffeine which diminishes its value for sports performance. If you want to use caffeine as a supplement you really need to stop its use as a beverage. The only caffeine you consume in a day should be that taken the hour before your weight workout. On days you dont lift weights, no caffeine. If you have a race or contest, you should stop all caffeine use the week before the event so you can benefit its full effect on the big day. So there you have it, caffeine is the #1 best supplement for bodybuilding in my book but you gotta use it properly. For those of you interested keep watching and we will talk about the research. In this video I will give you a 5 phase program to build up your strength so you can do 100 pushups. First, a quick word about weight. There are lots of reasons to get leaner and lose fat and I'm about to give you another one. The #1 way to make pushups easier is to weigh less! Every pound of fat is a boat anchor holding you tightly to the earth. Do this workout 3 times a week until you can do 20 pushups in each of the 5 sets - then advance to Phase 2: Phase 2: Knee Pushups. Do as many as you can, then rest 2 minutes and do another set. Repeat this until you have done 5 sets. Do this workout 3x/week until you can do 20 pushups in each of the 5 sets - then advance to Phase 3 Phase 3: Drop Pushups. In this phase you are going to do 5 sets of 20 pushups. You will do as many real pushups as you can, then drop to your knees to finish the rest of the 20. Rest 2 minutes, and do another set. You will do this workout just 2 times a week. Repeat till you have done all 5 sets. When you can do 5 sets of 20 real pushups, advance to Phase 4 Phase 4: In phase 4 you will be doing two pushup workouts a week. Monday Workout (High Weight) Fill a backpack with weight equal to about 20% of your body weight. Do as many pushups as you can, without any rest take off the backpack and do as many pushups as you can without the backpack. Rest 3 minutes and repeat for a total of 5 sets. Thursday Workout (High Rep): You will do 4 sets of 100 reps with 5 min rest between sets. Do as many pushups as you can then without any rest, do as many knee pushups as you can, then without rest do as many counter pushups as you can for a total of 100 reps. If you want to gain muscle, lose fat, or maximize your athletic performance you cannot be sleep deprived. We live in a world of sleep deprived people. With every passing year there are more demands on our time: school, work, family, friends, facebook, television, the internet. The average person sleeps an hour less each night than those a century ago and its not because we need less sleep. If you are serious about losing fat or bodybuilding then you must get enough sleep, lets look at why its so important that you turn off the TV and go to bed early. If you are sleep deprived: - You get fatter - You burn muscle rather than fat - Your athletic skills decrease by 9% How is that for three great reasons to get enough sleep??? The easiest way to lose fat is to get enough sleep! Sleep is very important in regulating hormones. Turns out that when you are sleep deprived your leptin decrease and your ghrelin levels increase which causes your metabolism to slow down. It also makes you hungrier so that you eat more. Sleep deprivation is a double-bad for people trying to lose weight -- it makes you burn off fewer calories AND it makes you eat more, so you get FAT! Sleep deprivation makes you burn muscle rather than fat! If you are dieting while sleep deprived, you will burn twice as much muscle and only half as much fat. The message is clear, if you are on any sort of a diet trying to get ripped you MUST get enough sleep or you will lose muscle instead of fat! If you are eating less than your TDEE in an attempt to lose weight, you must get enough sleep or the weight you will be losing will be muscle instead of fat. Sleep deprivation slow you down, its like being drunk all day long. Not only do your run 4.5% slower but your athletic skills decrease by 9%. Your free throw accuracy decreases by 9% and your three-point field goal accuracy decreases by 9%. The easiest way to be at your peak performance is to get enough sleep. (references 5, 6) Thats a pretty scary list and problems with not getting enough sleep and I haven't even bother to bore you with it does to your ability to learn or the health problems associated with not getting enough sleep. The way I like using them is in conjunction with an arm workout where I am using heavy weights with low reps. I will do my whole workout with heavy weights and low reps but then the last 10 minutes I will do 21s. Its a great contrast and it gives you such a hard pump you'll swear your biceps are gonna burst. Thw biggest problem people have is in choosing the right weight, most people use a weight way too heavy and end up doing 15s or 18s instead of 21s. This exercise beats you up, choose the weight you think is right, then use 25% less! I like to do these with an ez-curl bar but if you can use a straight bar without causing elbow or wrist pain, thats fine too. If you want, you could do 21s with dumbbells too. Basically, use whatever you have even if its 5gallon buckets full of water. Take a shoulder width grip with your palms up. Now the only part of our body that is going to move here is our elbows - everything else is stationary. If you have to rock your torso back and forth then you are using too much weight. So heres how we do the 21s 7 reps bottom half 7 reps top half 7 reps full ROM Some form pointers, first use a mirror - stand sideways so you can see what halfway is. The mirror also helps make sure the elbows are motionless pinned against your side. Dont let them move forward and backward. KILLER!!!!! Rest 1-2 minutes and do it again. If you want an additional challenge, do these on a bosu ball. Controlling your weight over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays is easy. The holidays are mixed blessing for those who struggle with weight loss. It's a time of celebration but also of temptation, overeating and guilt. For many, Thanksgiving marks the beginning of a downward spiril of over-eating that doesnt end till spring when the winters startling fat gain causes them to start a drastic diet. It doesn't need to be this way! You can enjoy the holidays without feeling guilty with four simple suggestions! 1. Fifteen minutes before the big meal, drink two 16 ounce glasses of water. This will help make you feel full with less food. 2. Plan on getting two plates of food. On your first plate, don't pile the food on but rather just enjoy a small portion of everything. A satisfying taste. 3. After finishing your first plate, talk and and enjoy the company of friends and family for at least fifteen minutes before going back for seconds. This delay allows your stomach time to tell your brain that it's been satisfied. By delaying you will find that you will end up eating far less and being just as satisfied. 4. Start a new family tradition. After the meal, take a long walk! This serves two purposes. First it burns off that big meal you just had but more importantly, it makes you feel less guilty. Call it even, one big meal and one big walk. The next day you can go back to your healthy eating. This avoids the common effect the holidays have on people, the old "I've already blown it, I might as well wait till spring to start a diet" attitude. It combines cardio and resistance training into one non-stop great workout that will help you lose fat and get stronger. The only thing required is a cheap resistance band set available for $10 at big box stores. Make sure to crank your favorite tunes during this workout, it helps to make it fun! Here is the 30 minute whole body home workout: 10 minutes burpees (for cardio) 5 minutes pushups (for chest, triceps and shoulders) 5 minutes alternating rows and squats (for legs, butt, and lats) 5 minutes alternating curls and side raises (for shoulders and biceps) 5 minutes front planks (for abs/core) Here is how to work this workout into your weekly schedule: - Monday: 30 minute resistance band workout - Tuesday: 30 minutes brisk walking - Wednesday: 30 minute resistance band workout - Thursday: 30 minutes brisk walking - Friday: 30 minute resistance band workout - Saturday -- rest day - Sunday -- rest day Its *very* important for losing weight that you do your cardio every day!
